Jordan's Minister of Labor concludes US visit
Washington, DC (August 3, 2006) - Jordan's
Minister of Labor, Dr. Bassel Salem concluded a two-day
visit to Washington during which he met with U.S
government
officials, apparel industry leaders, and International
Trade bodies to discuss bi-lateral trade and labor
issues. "The trip was indeed very productive and we look
forward to working together with the US on bilateral
projects in the near future," said Dr. Salem.
The minister's visit focused on the Ministry of Labor’s
past, current, and future steps taken throughout Jordan
to ensure safe, fair, and equitable labor conditions.
Dr. Salem also discussed trade and labor issues in light
of the strong economic partnership between Jordan and
the United States.
Salem outlined the specific steps taken by his Ministry
to address recently identified labor violations in
Jordan. He also briefed US officials on the Ministry's
action plan to further improve the necessary monitoring
mechanisms to ensure that all participants in the
industry respect and adhere to the Jordan's labor laws
which are in turn in line with International labor laws
and standards.
Dr. Salem 's meetings included U.S Secretary of Labor
Mrs. Chao, AFL-CIO President John Sweeny, Ambassador
Miller of the State Department’s office to monitor
Trafficking in Persons (TIP), Jeff Krilla the State
Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy,
Human Rights, and Labor, USTR officials,
representatives of the American Apparel and Footwear
Association (AAFA), as well as various concerned parties
from the international trade industry.
