King Abdullah Meets Top U.S.
Business Leaders
(New York, September 20, 2006) – His
Majesty King Abdullah II on Wednesday met with a group
of leaders from the United States business community to
discuss the vital role of the private sector in
strengthening national economies and creating
opportunities for growth and development.
The meeting, held at Goldman Sachs’ headquarters in New
York’s Financial District, brought together senior
executives from more than 15 of the United States’
leading investing institutions.
King Abdullah shared his vision for Jordan’s economic
future, highlighting the importance of public-private
partnerships to the country’s progress and their utility
in maximizing the effectiveness of development programs.
He also underscored the importance of investing in the
region’s youth, who make up over fifty percent of the
population in the Middle East.
King Abdullah stressed that investing in education will
yield high returns by equipping youth with the necessary
skill sets to carry the region forward toward
prosperity. The Jordan Education Initiative, a
pioneering effort to develop the quality of education,
has been adopted as a model by a number of Arab
countries.
The King addressed the geopolitical and security
challenges facing the region, which he said often hinder
economic growth and development in the Middle East. The
foremost of these challenges, said the King, is the lack
of a just solution to the Palestinian issue.
Despite the regional situation, Jordan has been able to
make great economic strides due to its economic openness
and investment environment, making the country a gateway
for regional and global business. King Abdullah spoke of
major investment opportunities and niche markets, such
as tourism and financial services, as significant
engines of growth.
Participants shared their views on how Jordan could
further develop its economy to enhance the quality of
life for the country’s population.
The King said he appreciated their valuable insights,
adding that Jordan draws on the successful American
experience of public-private partnership as a model for
making Jordan a stronger partner for global economic
progress. .
